In the video lesson for chapter 5 lesson 7 I say that the distance is in mph at one point. This is a mess up in the video.

It seems I completely switched problems halfway through doing it or something. I'm working on getting it fixed, but in the mean time I'll clarify what distance, time, and rate are measured in.

  • Distance will always be in a length measure (miles, feet, meters, kilometers, etc.).
  • Time will be in units of time (seconds, minutes, hours, weeks).
  • Rate is the speed and thus given in units of length per time (miles per hour, miles per minute, kilometers per hour, feet per second).

For the problem in the video, the question is if Mr. Jones is traveling 80 mph for 16 miles, how long has he been traveling?

Here we have d=16, r=80, t=?  . Time, t, is what we are looking for. Using the distance formula, d=rt, we can create an equation for this problem.

16=80t

16/80=80𝑡/80

t = 0.2 hours

Mr. Jones has been traveling for .2 hours, or 12 minutes.
