On 8f the book says " Check your  answer for part e of this exercise in your formula for part b, letting x= 2 and y=-8." I got      for an answer, but the answer book says that is wrong. Could you explain?

Okay, 8.f) asks you to check using the formula you found in 8.b). That was when you took the formula for the average of two numbers and solved it for y. You would have found 𝑦=2𝑎−𝑥.

In 8.e) you found that the average of 2 and -8 is -3 using the formula given for the problem. 𝑎=−3

In 8.f) to verify that 𝑎=−3 is true, you put it and 𝑥=2 and 𝑦=−8 into the formula 𝑦=2𝑎−𝑥 to see if this equation is true with those values.

−8=2(−3)−2

−8=−6−2

−8=−8, this is true so the value for a is correct.
