the question is: what is the 4th root of 64. I answered positive/ negative the square root of 8, which I am quite sure is right, however the answer guide says the solution is 4. this can't be right because 4 to the power of 4 is 256. I understand that it could just be a mistake, just making sure that I'm not missing anything.

thanks

Hi Rebecca, the question should be asking for the 3rd (cube) root of 64. That is a typo it sounds like.

The 4th root of 64 is an irrational number that approximately equals 2.83.

When finding the root of a number, we always give the positive answer for even numbers. So, it wouldn't be positive/negative.

The cube root of -64 would equal -4.

(8•8•8•8 = 64•64 = 4,096)
